  The Spirit Insists

The spirit insists of preaching the good news and helping the poor. Just as Jesus sent His disciples to preach the word and to minister the needy, so the spirit sends us today on the same twin mission.

Mark 3:14
He appointed twelve--designating them apostles --that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach

After Pentecost, the first century Christians were not interested in concealing the gospel but in revealing it! When the church was scattered in the persecution everyone shared their faith

Acts 8:1-4
1 And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.
3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.
4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.

Let us look at some of the acts of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts.

Acts 1:2
until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

Through the Spirit, Jesus prepares the apostles

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The Spirit would empower the Christians

Acts 2:4
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

The Spirit enabled them to speak different languages

Acts 4:31
After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

The Spirit filled the Christians with boldness

Acts 5:27-31
27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.
28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name," he said. "Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood."
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men!
30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.
31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

The Spirit equips them to speak even during opposition

Acts 8:29,39
29 The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it."
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

The Spirit advised missionaries where to preach and when to move on

Acts 9:31
Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

The Spirit encouraged the church, leading it to greater strength

Acts 11:24
He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

The Spirit filled men and used them

Acts 13:2-4
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

The Spirit conceives the mission plans

Acts 16:6-7
6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.

The Spirit sometimes blocks missionary plans

Acts 20:28
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

The Spirit places leadership in place

Do I have a true passion to see the world evangelized in my lifetime? Do I resist the Holy Spirit by not speaking out and sharing the truth with others? Would I be willing to be a missionary?
